The sling is to steady the gun. You buckle it as tight as possible around your arm, and pass it through the sling swivel at the underside of the rifle. This helps redistribute the weight of the gun so you can take longer to aim your shot. It hurts, but the scores are better. You could always tell who the best shooters were by the permanent ring of bruises around their arm from too-tight slings.
